Leading Change

Saying 'we don't do that’ means that collectively ‘we disagree’. You may be using this to try and force your opinion; whereas your assumptions could benefit from being tested. Instead try something like: “I think X, it's how it's been done here in the past and it may/may not work for us”.

Why?

It’ll prevent the other person from putting up their defence barriers and make it easier to find common ground for the conversation to move forward. It shows you are willing to listen and learn, creating a more open and collaborative environment.

You know it’s working when:

  • You catch yourself before saying it and correct yourself

  • You get better conversations and ideas

  • You see other people using this too
